Summary[]
News of the Sega Saturn and Playstation breaking in a million sales is made and many arcade games are ported to home consoles. Haruo of course takes advantage of this playing games like Virtua Fighter in his room.
While waiting at a train station with Chihiro and another girl, Koharu receives a love confession. She, however, flatly rejects it and afterward checks on Haruo who is busy at his home playing video games. They talk about Harou's current life, how he's getting by in high school, and now has a part-time job. His plans are to use the money he makes from his job to purchase more video games for himself. Furthermore, he claims that he's glad that he didn't make it into Joran High as he wouldn't be able to play video games often. Haruo is thankful, though, that he made it into the same high school as Kōtarō. Right, when Koharu wanted to ask Haruo about Akira, Haruo cuts her off and asks her about what games she has for the Playstation. Koharu names off the games she has for the system and invites Haruo to play them with her. Haruo refuses, though, as she's a staunch Sega Saturn supporter. The topic then changes to why Haruo hasn't gone to the arcades in a long time. His response is because he's saving money for game systems.
At the gaming center, Haruo is challenged by Koharu to a game of SF II and she chooses Akuma, which astounds him. Still, he faces off against her with E. Honda and loses, which greatly frustrates him. So, Haruo challenges him to the Dark Stalkers Sequel game Vampire Hunters, however, he loses again. The loss shatters his pride as a gamer and he laments over the ordeal during the night. To regain the arcade skills that he lost, Haruo is adamant to retrain himself at the local arcade. He starts by playing SF Alpha and chooses Nash to play as.
In order to properly psych himself up for his ambition, Haruo listens to a bunch of video game music from his favorite titles. Genta criticizes Haruo for his musical tastes comparing them to idol groups, but Kōtarō stands up for the oblivious Haruo. Afterschool, Genta inquires about how Akira has been and to confirm a rumor that Haruo was seen together with her. Being blunt, Haruo denies the rumor, which elates the ostentatious Genta. Kōtarō then asks Haruo about Akira, but he refuses to talk about it. This leads Kōtarō to believe that Haruo has developed an inferiority complex by not being able to make it into Joran. Therefore, Kōtarō offers Haruo advice whenever he needs it. The three boys then go to the arcade center and while Haruo continues his training, Genta and Kōtarō bet on some horse races. Soon, Koharu approaches Haruo and they face off against each other in Samurai Spirits. By throwing out dirty jokes Koharu manages to win his first match, however, he loses the second match against her. Undeterred by this loss, they play The King of Fighters '94 and Street Fighter Alpha, to which, Haruo loses against Koharu in both games. Feeling jovial by her wins because she feels closer to Haruo as he's paying more attention to her now. Koharu makes a snide remark that Haruo should start playing Yie Ar Kung-Fu for the SNES and impetuously he agrees to it. Feeling as though she went overboard, Kōtarō who was watching from afar agrees and Genta is exasperated by envy how Haruo is able to hang out with Koharu.
Just when Koharu was going to exchange her money for more tokens, she runs into Akira.
